Making the right decisions in extraordinary times is the art of experienced experts, and in today’s logistics this is more evident than ever. At TAL 2023, attendees could hear about the new reality in automotive from such luminaries as Robert Cameron from the German Association of the Automotive industry (VDA), Škoda Auto’s Head of Brand Logistics David Strnad and Klaus Straub, the founder and co-CEO of xelerate and the former CIO of BMW Group and Audi. The common thread in their presentations was the path that will lead us out of the complicated situation in which the entirety of automotive logistics finds itself today.
“We’ve already heard more than enough horror stories about the state of our industry. In today’s intensely performance-focused environment, it’s vital to always understand what’s going on around us. We need to share tips and experience showing how to grow and succeed. I believe the TAL 2023 conference offered precisely this to its participants,” explains Roman Žák, co-founder of the conference’s main organiser Aimtec.
At the start of the conference, Žák also pointed out that within digitalisation, companies shouldn’t just seek suppliers – they should find partners capable of developing the essential abilities enabling them to endure in a changing world.
Trends and technologies that can radically increase companies’ resilience were a natural part of the conference. Tom Bianculli, the CTO of Zebra Technologies, presented his overview of the latest hardware innovations tailor-made for smart digitalisation. Case studies from Brano and SCHERDEL made it clear to the audience just how varied the roads to full warehouse automation can be.
“This year's conference is proof that automation is indeed a necessity, but one that doesn't have to be painful. Swisslog has received many requests from companies on how they can integrate the AutoStore automation solution into their existing infrastructure in a very convenient and efficient way – without disrupting their current business processes. Manual handling processes have become increasingly impractical due to labour shortages, inefficiencies, lack of scalability and congestion in stores or warehouses,” says Elke Pistono, Head of Major Accoun Management AutoStore Europe at Swisslog, a main partner of TAL 2023.
Meanwhile, a reference story from aerospace manufacturer Safran, which offered experiences from the slightly different, but highly fascinating world of aviation and aeronautics, underscored the importance of managing the digital transformation as a fundamental change within a company.
Companies’ digitalisation can be sustainable – in several ways. From process standardisation to the deployment of systems across global branches to green logistics, this year’s conference provided tried-and-true guides and tips from experts in the field. Pavlína Babková from Bosch explored firms’ possibilities for reducing carbon footprint in manufacturing, while Cyril Klepek, the CEO of Cyrkl, presented the concept of the circular economy in relation to industrial waste.
“We’re seeing proof yet again of how fundamentally it can help in logistics when experts join together and share their experience. In this respect, this year’s 22nd edition of the TAL conference, once again exceeded our expectations, perhaps in part because networking and the presence of the latest topics on the programme have been among the event’s main goals throughout its many years,” remarked Bernard Bauer and Richard Brunner, representatives of the event’s co-organisers – the German-Czech Chamber of Industry and Commerce and IHK Regensburg.
Underscoring the programme’s diversity was the closing presentation by biologist and photographer Petr Jan Juračka, who whisked participants away on an Icelandic expedition and described everything hidden within a single picture of the wilds.
The main partners of this year’s Trends in Automotive Logistics conference were Swisslog and Zebra Technologies. “Although the current state of automotive logistics is challenging, TAL 2023 once again brought a comprehensible insight into the broad spectrum of tools, innovations, technologies, and corporate experience with the digital transformation. Thanks to this, participants could bring home inspiration for their own projects,” notes Dominika Radil, Channel Account Manager CZ&SK Zebra Technologies.
